Article: Prisoners being released early.

Three offenders are let out of Durham prisons early each day, according to new figures.

The figures, released by the Ministry of Justice, show that 564 prisoners were released early from HMP Low Newton and HMP Durham between June 2007 and January 2008.

Across the whole of the North East, 1,167 were let out early during the same time.

Now the Tories are calling for stricter measures to be introduced to keep tabs on prisoners who are freed early to ease jail overcrowding.

Under their plans, which were unveiled in a Green Paper on prison reform this month, courts will set a minimum and maximum jail term, with no automatic early release.
