Hong Kong has a total population of 5.7 million, of which about 98 per cent are Chinese in origin. In this demographic sense, Hong Kong is essentially a Chinese society. In the cultural sense, Hong Kong also appears as a Chinese society. Most of the Chinese people, especially the adults, were immigrants from China. They have carried with them the cultural tradition from various parts of China, especially the Guangdong Province. About 90 per cent of the Hong Kong Chinese are Cantonese.
