Jaffer Associates Corp. of Miami, working for the South Florida Water Management District, was drilling a 30-inch-diameter, single-zone monitoring well on Native American land in the Everglades, when at a depth of 203 feet, the project was terminated due to technical and contractual issues. Faced with a plug-and-abandonment project--and approximately 16,000 gallons of drilling fluid to dispose of in a very environmentally sensitive area where drilling fluid cannot come in contact with the surrounding environment--Gary Bielak with Jaffer Associates Corp. had to look outside of the box for a solution to the disposal problem.
