WASHINGTON-A behavioral science experiment conducted by a pharmacy benefit manager to persuade plan members to switch to a generic statin after Zocor lost patent protection helped save Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's Cos. Inc. $1.5 million annually in health care costs.

The experiment was the brainchild of Bob Nease, chief scientist at St. Louis-based Express Scripts Inc. His role is to advance the understanding of consumer behavior and help develop tools that enable employers and other health plan sponsors achieve better value from their pharmacy benefit programs.
