New York is not alone among American cities whose transit systems are reducing service and raising fares to cope with cutbacks in government funding. A recent survey by the American Public Transit Association revealed that at least 40% of APTA's member agencies are considering similar action. But the sheer size of New York's system--coupled with NJ Transit, it accounts for half of all rail transit ridership in the nation--makes New York a macrocosm of what could lie in store for transit riders elsewhere. And for New York riders, the outlook is dreary.
Jobs are being abolished, maintenance is being reduced, expansion projects are being put on hold. But those measures ...
