Hair follicles may soon help 'grow' new blood vessels

New York, Mar 30 (PTI) -- Imagine physicians growing new blood vessels or skin tissue from the hair on their patients' heads. Well, it may soon be a reality.

A team of researchers at the University of Buffalo has carried out a study showing that stem cells isolated from sheep hair follicles contain the smooth muscle cells that grow new vasculature.

"We have demonstrated that engineered blood vessels prepared with smooth muscle progenitor cells from hair follicles are capable of dilating and constricting, critical properties that make them ideal for engineering cardiovascular tissue ...
