IT WASN'T always about high-definition television sets, clothing, beauty products, and sporting gear for Amazon.com. The giant Web-retail pioneer began its online venture as a bookseller that rapidly grew to include almost everything and the kitchen sink. But the company is returning to its roots in some fashion. In recent months, Amazon enhanced its electronic book offerings with the Kindle, a portable e-book reader that allows users to download digital titles over a cellular network. And in January, the company announced it would acquire Audible, a purveyor of downloadable audio books.
