UK and Australian researchers have called for increased security of alcohol hand rub dispensers following reports of more than double the cases of ingestion and eye contact since their widespread introduction in health care facilities.

The study of toxicology databases in the UK and Australia of poisonings in adults and children exposed to alcohol hand wipes, found the number of cases increased from 23 to 50 over a three year period.

The study was conducted from December 2003 to March 2005 and April 2005 to July 2006 and is thought to be the first to look at the potential dangers of using alcohol-based rubs.
