The largest meat recall in U.S. history occurred on Feb. 17, with over 143 million pounds of raw and frozen beef products withdrawn from the market. The HALLMARK/WESTLAND MEAT PACKING CO., Chino, CA, was shut down after the products were "determined to be unfit for human food because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection," according to the FDA recall release (Feb. 17). "Downer" cattle, or cows who are not able to stand up on their own, are often not allowed into the food supply as it can be a symptom of Mad Cow Disease.
