I first met Ana Castillo, Chicana poet, novelist, and now playwright in 1985 in Madrid, where both of us were conducting research. Ana was on a research grant from the Illinois Arts Council working on her novel Sapogonia and I on a Fulbright Fellowship continuing my research on festivals. We traveled to Barcelona together. After a few days, Ana went on to Paris and I returned to Madrid to continue my work there. We have remained friends ever since.
