COLUMBUS, Ohio - Saori Haruguchi became the first NCAA swimming champion in Oregon State University history when the junior won the 200-yard butterfly Saturday at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Haruguchi started her day in the preliminaries by qualifying first in 1 minute, 53.91 seconds. In the final, she set an NCAA meet record and beat the OSU school record by more than a second when she finished in 1:52.39.
Elaine Breeden of Stanford, who set the NCAA meet mark of 1:53.02 last year, was second in 1:53.27.
