Botanical Society recorder regrets loss of flower-rich meadows of his youth; Monmouthshire plants on map.(News)

WHEN Trevor Evans retired from teaching in 1984 he decided to fill the days with nothing less than a complete survey of the plants in his native Monmouthshire.

Already county recorder - since 1972 - for the Botanical Society of the British Isles, he divided the county into a grid system, mobilised more than 70 fellow botanists and got to work mapping every plant.

The ultimate prize, The Flora of Monmouthshire, published in an edition of 500, was a long time coming - so long that Tim Rich, head of vascular plants at the National Museum ...
