BARBARA WOOTTON (1897-1988) was a prominent British social scientist with a truly diverse range of academic and research interests. Educated in economics at Cambridge University, Wootton went on to hold several academic positions, including professor of social studies at the University of London, during which time she taught student social workers. Although she was born into a privileged family, Wootton was no stranger to human tragedy. Her father died when she was 11 years old. In 1917, at the age of 20, she not only lost her brother but her husband, with whom she had shared a honeymoon of less than 48 hours; both were killed in the trenches in France during World War I. ...
