To determine which cars offer the most "muscle per gallon (http://www.usnews.com/articles/business/your-money/2008/04/02/cars-with-the-most-thrill-per-gallon.html)," we started with all the vehicles in the U.S. News Best Cars (http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/) database, multiplied the horsepower rating by the city miles-per-gallon number, and divided by 100 to create an easy-to-follow index number. Then we ranked the cars by that number. Our results reveal the cars that offer the best--and worst--mix of performance and fuel economy.
