THE OPENING BATTLES of the First World War in the summer of 1914 produced disparate results for Austria-Hungary and her ally, Germany. Habsburg forces suffered serious military defeat at the two battles of Lemberg, while the Germans emerged victorious at Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes on the Eastern Front. However, on the Western Front, German troops were soundly defeated at the battle of the Marne.
