Richard M. Daley says he envisioned a different kind of Chicago, one with a much higher international profile, when he began going to the glittery World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in 1997.
The son of gritty Bridgeport built a new Daley Dynasty on the premise of a prettified, eco-conscious, post-industrial magnet for international visitors, young professionals and subsidy-seeking businesses.
He planted 500,000 trees, put flowers on Michigan Avenue and a green roof on City Hall, doled out hundreds of millions in subsidies to developers, spent big on Millennium Park and launched a bid for the 2016 Olympics.
