Scientists at Sunderland University have made a major breakthrough in the fight against a deadly hospital superbug which kills tens of thousands of people every year.
Lives could be saved after a team of researchers developed a test which can detect deadly infection pseudomonas aeruginosa at an early stage.
The superbug particularly affects people with cystic fibrosis but can also attack anyone with immune defects, including burns victims, transplant patients and those with cancer or Aids.
The infection is extremely difficult to cure because it is highly resistant to antibiotics, so early detection makes a huge difference to a patient's chances ...
