Brittany vegetable growers will shortly be deciding whether to accept recommendations which could change their traditional auction system.

For the past 25 years crops have been sold daily by co-operatives through an integrated system at St Pol de Leon. Paimpol and St Malo. Produce is bought by the 70 or so importers, then packed and shipped throughout Europe.

It comes to the UK on the Channel ferry services to Plymouth, Southampton and Portsmouth, taking two days to reach retail stores.

The system has been highly successful, bringing standardisation and a strong promotional image to over 7,500 small scale growers.
