Who will care for nurses?(mail)(Letter to the editor)

I read the editorial in the February issue of ANJ and was struck by the reference to initiatives to attract nurses back into the hospital sector. My colleagues and I were recently discussing why nurses doing an evening shift are then expected to get up early to do a morning or day shift the next day. One senior nurse was not happy about a roster consisting of doing alternating late--early shifts. This nurse said she felt 'burned out'. In the course of our discussion we decided doing an evening followed by an early morning shift should be illegal, as it really is physical, mental, and emotional abuse.
