THE Galmoy mine will likely close sooner rather than later, and the government must act now to protect employment in the north west of the county, a local councillor has warned.

Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh (FG) has pointed out that the lead and zinc mine is due to close in three years' time, with local speculation that the end date could arrive even sooner.

This means planning should begin now to attract other business to the area and to prevent a surge of unemployment.
