In 200l, Mac Maharaj edited Reflections in Prison: Voices from the Liberation Struggle, a series of essays secretly written, mostly in 1976, by men imprisoned on Robben Island for treason against the apartheid state. The most famous contributor was Nelson Mandela, who in 1994 became the first president of a democratic South Africa. Maharaj smuggled the essays out when he was released in October 1976 after serving twelve years but did not include his story in the published volume.
