TOWARD the end of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," the novel's narrator, Nick Carraway, ponders about the rich aspirations of the earliest Dutch settlers of Long Island. No doubt, Isaac Newton Van Nuys' Dutch lineage can be traced back to these settlers.
For health reasons, Van Nuys came to California for the climate. But certainly the 30-year-old New Yorker had more lofty aspirations that pulled him to California in 1865 because years later his success as a farmer and businessman contributed to the growth of Los Angeles. Thus, a community was named after him.
