Chronic atrophic gastritis occurs when the gastric mucosal barrier is damaged. There are a number of causes such as infection with helicobacter pylori and chronic liver disease, as well as drugs, smoking and alcohol. The symptoms manifest as repeated attacks of gastric pain and distension, acid regurgitation and poor appetite. In China atrophic gastritis comprises 10-30% of chronic gastritis cases and has a high morbidity, with patients 20 times more likely to develop gastric cancer than the normal population.
