Jan. 9--Giumarra Vineyards Corp. has had to lay off about half of the 250 employees in its Kern County bottling plant because of Snapple's poor sales in 1995 and secondarily the seasonal nature of the business, company Vice President John Giumarra Jr. said Monday. Giumarra Vineyards is one of the major suppliers for Snapple in the United States, at one time producing 1 million bottles a day.
During the winter off-season, the plant in Edison has been shut down since Christmas and will reopen in mid-January.
"We are concerned," Giumarra said. "It's very significant to us. Snapple is 50 percent of our bottling division."
