Balance is a delicate, even subjective judgment. Assessing whether a wine list is balanced depends very much on who is doing the evaluating and where they stand on any number of things. Be that as it may, balance is a crucial element of the well-written wine list.
I recall a wine list from a Detroit establishment that offered red wines in the usual style classifications: light reds, medium-bodied reds, bold and powerful reds. A quick count revealed there were about 250 bold reds, 100 medium reds and exactly three light reds.
