A growing number of hospitals are opening chest pain centers-areas of their emergency rooms designed and staffed specifically to diagnose and treat people experiencing heart attacks or other chest pains. Since 1991 the number of hospitals with chest pain centers has increased from 30 to 550, and that number is expected to double within a year, according to Modern Healthcare (April 24, 1995). But are these centers really the wave of the future for diagnosing and treating heart problems, or are they simply a marketing tool to increase hospital profits?
