Not long after the Civil War ended in 1865, Americans wandered Gettysburg's battlefields in Pennsylvania in search of a deeper understanding of the war. Several decades later, when the Park Service began managing the site as a National Military Park, rangers did their best to interpret the events. But over time, the visitor experience grew stale. The museum and visitor center sat directly on the Union Army's battle line, hindering people's ability to visualize the landscape as it was in 1863. A hodgepodge of dimly lit museum exhibits did little to enhance people's understanding of the war. Century-old artifacts collected mold in basement rooms that lacked heat and humidity ...
