Like most first-time safari hunters, I wanted a kudu more than anything on my South African plains game hunt. A bushbuck--that cheeky, chocolate-colored wraith of the bushveld--was a close second. Sure, I wanted the more common stuff, too, but those spiral-horned beauties were the top draw, until another pair of spiral-horns caught my eye.
My first priority-changing moment came early on the second day of my first safari. We had just left camp when a massive eland boldly stepped into the road in front of our safari car. When it saw us, it bolted with a speed and agility that belied its bovine appearance.
