The children clapped at the story's end. "They did not chop down the trees!" exclaimed Loren, as if for the group.
Mrs. Damkoehler, the science resource teacher, had just come to the first-grade classroom to share one of her favorite stories, The Great Kapok Tree (Cherry 1990). Both Damkoehler and the classroom teacher, Mrs. Gehrenbeck, were amazed at the poignant response and the captivated interest that had developed as the children listened to the story. Several times the children picked up the theme, chanting, "Do not chop it down!" The story had sparked a special reverence for rain forests.
