The prevalence of overweight and obese individuals continues to rise in the United States, and excess adiposity is recognized as a serious health concern because of its association with increased morbidity and mortality. (1) In 2004, the prevalence of overweight and obese US adults reached record levels at 66.3% and 32.2%, respectively, whereas 17.4% of children and adolescents were overweight.
