Texas officials bravely insist that the Lone Star State will avoid the economic hardships afflicting other regions of the country in 2008, and so far the data bears them out.

Comptroller Susan Combs, the top economic official, says statistics gathered by her office don't point toward recession or even a downturn that would cause belt-tightening in state government.

"I cannot see us making any adjustments in the next year," she told The Bond Buyer.

Texas led the nation in employment growth in 2007, adding 219,000 jobs, Combs said.
