As the century draws to a close, political thought in Western democracies is in turmoil. Fascism, communism, and socialism - the great "isms" that defined much of twentieth-century political life - are in disrepute. Liberalism stands triumphant in an industrialized world undergoing rapid technological transformation. But it is a liberalism that is increasingly uncomfortable with itself.
