Electrical discharge machining is a more versatile tool with the addition of EDM milling to traditional diesinking and wirecutting EDM technologies. Developed by Swiss-based Charmilles Technologies Corp, Lincolnshire, IL, EDM milling uses standard cylindrical electrodes of varying diameters to machine cavities in molds by successive programmed sweeps of the electrode. Powerful algorithms of the computer numerical control compensate for electrode wear, guaranteeing workpiece accuracy along the three axes.
