According to two lumber executives, efficient consumer response is the key to surviving in a rapidly changing industry.

Suppliers in the lumber industry assume they're responding efficiently to their customers, but technology is showing them up, according to Eric Canton, chairman and president of Canton Lumber Co. The exchange of data between manufacturers, distributors and retailers can make customer response more efficient than ever, he said.

Both he and Michael Wigley, ceo of Great Plains Supply Inc., spoke at a seminar on the lumber market at the National Building Products Exposition and Conference [SM] in Chicago.
