3M, a leading supplier of data storage media, is now offering PC users a new option, a 650 MB rewritable optical disk. The disk is used in a phase change dual-function drive that not only reads and writes to the PD disk, but also reads CD-ROM discs. PD drives can thus be used instead of CD-ROM drives in multimedia PCs to provide users with a high-capacity data storage capability, along with the ability to read 1X, 2X and 4X CD-ROMs as well as audio and other format CDs. PD drives have been introduced by Panasonic Communications and Systems Co. (Secaucus, NJ) and NEC Technologies (Boxborough, MA).
