Nevada County, Calif., yesterday accused a senior SEC attorney of intimidating a county lawyer into giving up the county's right to legal counsel during a series of meetings in which county officials were asked about their roles in a failed bond deal.
Securities and Exchange Commission officials refuse to comment on the charges. But sources close to the case said the controversy may have grown out of a misunderstanding over a potential conflict of interest. The conflict involved questions over whether a Nevada County lawyer should be representing both the county and a county official who was critical of the bond transaction.
The SEC is now pursuing fraud ...
