Fund raisers are advised to write position papers to draw the interest of prospective donors to their cause. The position paper outlines the organization's stand on an issue, their goals and their recognition of the potential donor's apparent interest in the same issue. The paper may be an informal statement that can be followed by a more formal proposal.
What should you do when a grant or gift opportunity presents itself, but you're not quite ready to act? Do nothing and the chance is gone; do too much and your lack of preparation sticks out like a sore thumb. Maybe a "position paper" is the answer.
