Waste Management to take El Cajon, Oceanside garbage to Irvine dump

San Diego-based Waste Management of California Inc. will begin hauling trash to Orange County Jan. 1.

The company was awarded one of two contracts with Orange County after supervisors there took the unprecedented step of implementing a cash-for-trash policy to reduce its debt. The county declared bankruptcy Dec. 6, 1994, after officials discovered $1.7 billion of its investment pool had been lost through risky investments.
