DOES Barry Diller's latest television role pass the screen test? On November 27th Mr Diller, who made his name running Paramount Pictures and then creating the Fox TV network for Rupert Murdoch, said that his Silver King Communications group was buying Savoy Pictures Entertainment, an ailing film producer that owns majority stakes in four local television stations. Mr Diller is also buying the 40% of Home Shopping Network (HSN) owned by Liberty Media, a unit of America's biggest cable televison company, Tele- Communications Inc (TCI). Mr Diller gets control of HSN's voting shares; he will also become its chairman. The total value of the two deals is a little over $500m.
