The big story: Akron will house the headquarters of a new national initiative that aims to expand high-speed Internet access across the United States, and the city also will be the first beneficiary. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation pledged up to $25 million over the next five years to help communities across the nation create more ways and places to access high-speed Internet connections. OneCommunity, a Cleveland nonprofit that connects government and nonprofit organizations in Northeast Ohio to high-speed Internet, will lead the new Knight Center of Digital Excellence for the foundation.
