Article: Chronic fatigue syndrome: looking for answers: one million Americans have this debilitating condition, which affects both the mind and body. Scientists are working hard to find a cause and a cure.(Clinical report)

Many people who visit their doctors complaining of chronic fatigue suffer from depression, inadequate sleep, a sleep disorder, overwork, or a medical condition such as hypothyroidism or anemia. But for two to five percent of patients, a complex and disabling condition called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) appears to be to blame for their symptoms. Although researchers are working to understand CFS, no single cause is yet clear and no cure has been found. But progress is being made in identifying issues contributing to its development, thanks to recent studies that are helping to fill in missing pieces of the CFS puzzle.
