A [pounds sterling]2-BILLION proposal to build a tidal barrier across the Wash has sparked environmental fears in West Norfolk
If built, the barrier would stretch from Hunstanton to near Skegness.
It is claimed that flood protection would be provided for half-a- million people while access for shipping would be maintained.
Backers argue that the barrier could be used to harness tidal energy and act as a base for wind turbines.
The creation of a sheltered "world-class" area for water sports off Hunstanton is predicted along with an economic boom for West Norfolk, according to the Cambridge-based Wash Tidal Barrier Corporation.
