Barry Larkin, the hard-hitting, smooth-fielding shortstop of the Cincinnati Reds, recently was named the National League's (NL) Most Valuable Player, making him the first shortstop to win the award since Maury Wills did it in 1962.
Larkin's overall efficiency swayed the Baseball Writers of America to convincingly choose Larkin over some of the players with bigger individual statistics in the NL.
"I'm glad the NL voters were able to notice the intangibles that Barry brings to the game," Reds general manager Jim Bowden said about them star shortstop, who is the odds-on favorite to win his second straight Gold Glove as well.
