"Mormons Dismayed by Harsh Spotlight" is the headline on the front page of the Wall Street Journal the day after Mitt Romney dropped out of the race. The story says, among other things, that I wrote that "a Mormon presidency would threaten Christian faiths." Not so. As readers may remember, my position was that Mitt Romney was in many ways a very attractive candidate but I believed that commentators were underestimating the uneasiness of many Americans, and not only evangelicals, with the prospect of a Mormon president. A major reason for such uneasiness is that a Mormon in the White House would enhance the influence of Mormonism, which they view as a false religion. Whatever ...
