The inland and coastal sectors of the work-boat industry are building new equipment to replace obsolete towboats and barges in impressive numbers.
Walter Blessey of Blessey Marine Services said he currently has over 20 barges either under construction or under contract for construction. The Harahan, La.-based tank barge operator also has several pushboats under construction, with two about to be delivered.
"We're building cautiously but building where we know we have business to support the new construction," said Blessey. "And rates have definitely gone up to deal with the high price of construction. That's very encouraging."
