Rising food prices are wreaking havoc and have caused street protests from Mexico to India to Senegal and now South Africa. Cosatu has warned that this country could face widespread food riots as wheat, maize and rice prices have rocketed beyond the ability of the poor to buy staple foods.
The soaring food prices have been fuelled by dry weather conditions in key growing areas, competition from biofuels, rising oil prices affecting production and delivery costs, and the growing demand for a variety of foods from the emerging Asian markets.
