The assignment was a challenging one awarded to me by the New York State Metropolitan Transit Authority's Arts for Transit project. I was to work with children and create a series of murals depicting the history of Greenwich Village. The murals were to be composed of ceramic and mosaic tile and were to be permanently installed in the Christopher Street subway station in the heart of Greenwich Village.
In order to prepare, I talked to teachers, art educators and museum personnel. As a result, I decided to work with eight fifth and sixth grade students for ninety-minute sessions twice a week.
