When the government tabled the Judicial Services Commission Amendment Bill in parliament last year, aimed at dealing with misconduct among judges, it was welcomed as a much-needed initiative towards greater judicial accountability in South Africa. The Bill is expected to be passed soon.
The country's approximately 207 judges are for the most part a hard-working, professionally talented and ethically responsible group.
