Champions Halifax Irish brought the curtain down on a tremendous league campaign with a 17th win in 18 games.
Clayton played their part, clawing their was back from 22-0 down to draw level at 28-28, only for Irish player coach Anthony Irvine to come up with the clinching play.
His super blindside run and pass to Michael Reed with 10 minutes left gave his side a try and the momentum to clinch victory.
Half backs Graham Charlesworth and Chris Holroyd were prominent again, Charlesworth notching a hat-trick and Holroyd coming up with a brace of tries.
Charlesworth opening the scorfrom Des Clark's offload, Charlesworth added the first of his four conversions.
