Colonial Rosary: The Spanish and Indian Missions of California is a good book for an audience of nonspecialists or first-time visitors to the California missions. Its seventeen chapters cover a wide range of topics, from precontact (California before the missions were established) to the Spanish Revival movement (the cycle of decline and restoration). In less than two hundred pages, Alison Lake provides important information that cannot be gleaned from a simple mission brochure.
